Practice Audit Results

The Bixter Practice has been actively auditing its efforts to improve patient's health for the last 10 years:-

Asthma Care

Judith Clubb has been trained in asthma care and runs the practice's clinic.

The number of patients with asthma as increased by half as much again over 10 years. Since we started the asthma clinic nearly 3 times as many patients attend now and we can show that those patients who do attend, have as a group, 7 times fewer symptoms of asthma such as having frequent wheeze or night-time cough than they did at the start.

Diabetes

Judith Clubb has been trained in diabetes care and runs the practice's clinic.

The number of patients with diabetes increases every year, mostly overweight adults, and over the last 8 years the numbers have nearly doubled. However with much effort on everyone's part the % of patients with good control of their blood sugar has doubled, as has the % of patients with healthy levels of cholesterol. The % of patients with a healthy blood pressure is 4 times that of 8 years ago.

High blood pressure

High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor in having a stroke.

In the last 8 years the % of the over 40 year-olds we know to have high blood pressure has doubled. In the past not everyone was on treatment if their blood pressure was raised but now virtually everyone is on tablets and the % of people with a healthy blood pressure has more than doubled to above 80%.

Coronary Heart Disease

The number of patients with known heart disease appears to have dropped over the last 8 years by about a quarter. Patients blood pressure control has improved despite the target level being lowered to more beneficial but harder to achieve levels. Over the same time period 6 times more patients have had their cholesterol level lowered to healthy levels and 3 times more patients are now taking aspirin or similar medicines to help prevent further problems such as heart attacks.

We think that these results demonstrate that where patients are able to attend clinics, follow advice such as stopping smoking and take the medication prescribed, can improve the quality of their life now and help prevent problems in the future.

Help us to help you, keep that appointment, follow our advice and take your medicines as directed.
